   In the light of upcoming class reunions, let's take a look at what the world was like 10, 20, 30, 40, and even 50 years ago! It's good to be reminded of what kind of cultural changes we come from and to consider what kind of changes the future may hold. In contrast to the fast-paced world we live in, a blast from the past can be refreshing!
   
September 2009 
  • The number one song was "I Gotta Feeling" by the Black Eyed Peas.
  • The price of gas was $1.24.
  • Velvet tracksuits were very in. Low-rise jeans, over-sized hoop earings, multicolored tights, statement belts, skinny scarves, and Bakerboy hats were too!
  • The most popular car was the Ford F-Series
  • Pixar was getting ready to release "Up".

   September 1999 

  • The number one songs were Enrique Iglesias' "Bailamos" and TLC's "Unpretty".
  • The price of gas was $1.00 even.
  • Key fashion consisted of plastic chokers, turtleneck sweaters, highwaisted trousers, crop tops, and brands included in the design.
  • The most popular car was the Honda Accord
  • The Vierro Center in Kearney, NE was still being built. The Matrix was a new movie and Spongebob was just beginning his residency in Bikini Bottom.

   September 1989 

  • The number one songs were "Hangin' Tough" by New Kids on the Block, "Don't Want to Lose You" from Gloria Estafan, and "Girl I'm Gonna Miss You" by Milli Vanilli.
  • Gas was still $1.00.
  • Spandex, leg warmers, off the shoulder tops, and neon colors were the height of fashion.
  • Honda Accord was the most poplar car in the market.
  • Tim Burton's first Batman movie had been out for just about two months.
   September 1979
  • It's number one song was "My Sharona" by The Knack.
  • The price of gas was $0.86
  • Fashion meant identical patterns on both your shirt and pants- that's if you needed both. Jumpsuits were popular too!
  • The most popular car was the Oldesmobile Cutlass.
  • The walkmans had just hit the streets.
   September 1969
  • Music lovers were groovin' out to "Honkey Tonk Women" by The Rolling Stones and "Sugar, Sugar" from The Archies.
  •  Gas could be purchased for $00.35 a gallon.
  • Fashion trend setters donned the shapeless mini-dress, wild patterns (especially on tights), and fringed tops!
  • The most popular car was the Chevrolet Camero.
  • The Brady Bunch is introduced to T.V.
   Part of our culture's identity today can be found in these passing fads and pop culture themes and it's eye-opening to see how quickly our society moves on from decade to decade. I wonder how our world will have changed 10 years from now... or 50.
